“Young Sally”, an original Appalachian ballad and crankie by Sparrow Smith. From the record Carolina Mountains. Inspired by traditional murder ballads, many of which are about unplanned and unwanted pregnancy, this song wrote itself in the middle of the night that Roe versus Wade was overturned. The number of women who’s lives have been destroyed, because of lack of access to reproductive healthcare is countless. I read Mary Oliver’s poem Strawberry Moon the evening before this song spilled out, which shares the story of her aunt, sent to live alone in the attic for 40 years after becoming pregnant out of wedlock. The father experiences no consequences. Ballads are a big part of the musical tradition where we live, passed down through generations. Crankies are linda like an OG movie, telling the story visually in a very low fi way. This one is too heavy for me to perform regularly at shows, but I wanted to document it to share with the world, i think its an important story.
